Grief and Loss

Your Grief Came With Your Loss

Grief and loss are companions.

If you had not experienced a loss, you would not have to grieve.

Your grief is the proof that someone or something mattered to you.

Some of that grief is about the present. It can be the death of a pet, a spouse or partner, a sibling, a parent, a child or someone in your extended family, after a long illness or as a sudden shock.

Your Grief Also Reaches Back

Loss can also be about the past, and it counts just as much. There is grief for a parent who is still living and was never a parent to you, or for a childhood you lost by growing up far too young.

There is no doubt loss is complicated.

No two people grieve the same, so the way I work with your grief has to fit you.

Take It Slowly, and I Will Stay with You

Grief brings up more than sadness. Anger shows up too, and in my experience it tells you that you are in fact feeling what happened.

I will guide you through each of those emotions, including the ones that are hard to sit with.

Together we will address things slowly, so you can handle each step and not feel overwhelmed or like you cannot function.

My approach is client-centered, and your grief decides what we talk about each time.

Bring Every Feeling You Have

Whatever your situation is, I am here with you.

My job is to listen and to validate every emotion you have.

In my experience, something about the loss begins to shift once it has somewhere to go.

What You’re Grieving Can Touch Every Part of Your Life

The loss will never go away. Nor should it.

It is part of the person or the life you loved, and you get to keep it.

What can change is how much room it takes up in your days.

I believe grief is the gateway to healing, and that the rawest pain softens into something you can live with.

Keep Your Loss and Let It Settle

Your grief will not look like your sister’s or your friend’s, and it does not have to.

My hope is that you keep your loss and still find room for the rest of your life.
